Traders, get up! Sitting is the new smoking - and that's not a good thing.


We already know the dangers of smoking, and sitting is no different when it comes to trader's health. We all know that traders are typically glued to their chairs all day, monitoring their portfolios, charts and making decisions. But what we don't often realize is that this sedentary lifestyle can have serious consequences.

Sitting for too long can also lead to fatigue, stress, and poor circulation.

Prolonged sitting is linked to health issues like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and much more. Not to mention the physical toll it takes on our bodies, leading to poor posture, aching joints, and strain on our backs.


So..as a full time trader sitting all day, what can you do about it?


Well, if you want to stay healthy and alert while trading, it's important to stand up and move around every once in a while.

Taking frequent breaks is a great way to do this - you can set a timer and stand up and walk around every hour for example - it gives your body a chance to stretch, and it can also help improve your focus and productivity.


What if you don't have the time for breaks?


There are other ways to stay active.

For example, you could set up a standing desk or use a treadmill desk. I personally have a standing desk from Autonomous and I absolutely love it! (It was a bit hard to put it together by myself but I can't live without it now, I'll post a link of it at the end of this article so you can check it out).


Workout, workout, workout! Recent studies demonstrate that a minimum of 30-40min of moderate to intense physical exercise every day can help counteract the health risks posed by spending 10 hours seated.


Use your office Gym if you have one, or go to the gym down the street, go for a run, ride a bike, do whatever makes you happy but move, be active!


Not into working out? Ok, then be active in a smart way: walk to lunch, use the stairs instead of the elevator, do 10 body weight squats each time you need to use the bathroom ( I suggest doing them after your doing your business, your welcome), include co-workers in this so you stay motivated and motivate others doing the same!


In addition, invest in a wearable device for tracking progress and do activities that you find enjoyable, I personally love my Apple watch, you can also share your 'activities ring' from your Apple watch with other traders and co-workers so they can see how active you are during the day OR how lazy and poke you all day..


You are a trader but also a dad with kids at home and health isn't really your priority?

I understand and that's not an excuse, sorry, you can do the chores around the house, clean the garage, shovel the snow, cut the grass, clean the pool... whatever activities you can think of that will make you get active, do it (and your wife will appreciate it, your welcome!).

Think about activities where you can includes your family too: walks, bike ride...
